Now that I have my own home business I realize that I am cut-out to do this kind of work. The shoe fits and I wear it well. But I also realize that some people are just not cut-out to do this kind of work.

I often dreamed of having a business where I could make my own hours, take the day off it I needed to, work in my pajamas, and make the kind of income that would provide me the financial freedom to purchase things that I wanted to, instead of limiting them to things that I needed. My most depressing moments were thoughts of working until I was 70 before I could retire. What quality of life would I have at 70? Would I even live until then? If I did, would my health allow me to enjoy retirement?

When I answered an ad on the Internet that claimed that I could make a six figure income from home, I had no idea whether I would be cut out for this type of business. I didn’t even know if the business was legitimate. But I knew if I hid behind my skepticism that I would never find out, and I could be giving up the one opportunity that could help me retire before I was 70.

So I jumped in head first and did all of the things that was suggested. I ran ads on free advertising sites, passed out business cards, got involved in some surf for clicks programs, ran pay per clicks, took out newspaper ads, and have been involved in virtually every kind of low cost and free advertising campaign that was ever thought of. Some of these ideas worked and some didn’t, but I didn’t let the advertising failures deter me in the least. I simply dropped the campaigns that were not generating any traffic and kept the ones that did. Eventually, I had a business plan that was working for me and that was generating enough traffic to sustain a home business.

I have signed up and trained over 800 people during the last two years and early on I was amazed by the high failure rate. I’m less surprised now because I know this is not something that everyone wants to do. Many people today have the mindset that by having an Internet business it pays by the hour, and I’m sorry to say that it doesn’t.

You will work long hours for months building your website, setting up your advertising campaigns, exchanging links and getting listed with the search engines before you see one cent. Because in order to succeed on the Internet, you have to have traffic, and it takes some time to build it up. But when you do, the money will flow consistently and daily for the rest of your life with very little effort on your part.

Many of the people I have met on the Internet have jumped in full force for a few weeks or a month and then just kind of burnt out. The first few months are always the hardest because if you have never made money on the Internet, it’s very hard to keep yourself motivated to keep working towards something your not sure is going to pan out. But I assure you it will…

Some people are under the impression that it takes a huge investment to start an Internet business. It can if you want to pay for advertising, but if you’re willing to wait a few months, you can get started for as little as $20. I built my first website for $20, and spent the next few months doing nothing but exchanging links with other webmasters, submitting my site to directories and writing articles. These three things are huge traffic generators and they are free.

I’ve meet people who were close to heart failure at the thought of spending $20 to build a website. In this day and age, I find it really hard to believe that anyone is really that financially strapped. In my most financially strapped times, I know I spent $20 a month on things that I didn’t need. You have to keep in mind that this is an investment in your future. It will come back to you many times over.

And the hardest thing that I think that people deal with is the isolation of maintaining a home business. You won’t be going to the office and chatting with your co-workers, there is little to no phone conversations, and I have never had any human contact with any of my customers on the Internet. I do however send a lot of emails.

But that is fine with me, and I love it. I love the quiet times working alone. I love the fact that I am not interrupted by the phone every five minutes or by employees and co-workers running in and out of my office. I love the fact that I don’t have to commute any farther then to my home office.

So, as you can see there are many perks to owning a home business, and there are things that may not fit with your lifestyle or expectations. The shoe must fit in order for you to succeed.

In the present period the United States of America hands down is the greatest and most wealthy nation in the history of the human race. And as we look at the other players out there, well there is not even a close second. Our GDP alone is 5 times as great as the second highest nation. Our population of 300 million is the third largest in the world and we have the greatest middle class lifestyle of any civilization ever created. And our middle class is the largest in the world.

The United States has the most honest government and one of the freest and most healthy populations on the Planet. America also has the world’s most powerful military and is able to defend the nation against any enemy. The United States has one of the cleanest fresh water supplies and the best over all sewer treatment systems. It is readily apparent that the United States is at the top of this food chain for a reason.

Well, Quite Frankly, this is not good enough yet! As I am impressed with what our ancestors have achieved here, I see a lot of work to be done. And now is no time to rest on our laurels and sit in bathhouses and slap each other on the butt in celebration. No Sir, this is but Act IV of a set of books which will encompass three trilogies or nine books in all and we are not even thru the fourth act of a 26 Act play in the first book of the first trilogy. So it is time we collect all the frolickers and kick them in the ass and tell them to stop sitting on it. There is work to be done, because as good as we are and as far as we have come, quite frankly this is not good enough yet. Think on this in 2006.

The wet fly swing sounds like something one does at the square dance hall. Instead the wet fly swing is one of the oldest fly fishing techniques. It is used for all types of fish, where ever there is a current. Winter steelhead, salmon, big trout in big rivers, and even striped bass, are all prey that often require the use of the’ wet-fly swing’.

When to use it

The wet fly swing is designed to get the fly down deep quickly and swing it in front of the desired fish. Trout anglers use it when fish are holding deep, and not rising for any particular hatch. Winter steelheaders use it when steelhead loathe to move in the cold water and sit in between the feeding lanes or lie in the pocket water. Striped bass anglers find the wet fly swing works the baitfish imitations in the current, to give them a lifelike presentation, that fools fish again and again.
The wet fly swing is most often used with streamers, like the Woolly Bugger or Muddler Minnow and sometimes wet flies, like soft hackles or nymphs. It is used whenever the fly fisher wants his presentation to appear to be swimming freely in the current. Preferably broadside to the current, while the fish will be waiting either in pocket water behind big rocks, or in a seam where the current changes speed. It can also be used in tailouts below pools.

Rigging

Most fly fishing anglers will use the wet fly swing with a sinking tip line. The weight will depend on the species of fish and the size of the water. Steelheaders and salmon anglers will be using 8 or above, and it goes on down for the other game fish. The point is you will want to rig fairly big, as you will not only be fighting the fish, but the current as well, and often times current that is deep. The leaders tend to be shorter than average, as you want the fly to follow sinking tip line, and not rise up in the current. As the take will be deep, you don’t want to have to set the hook with a lot of slack leader.
Depth is of importance, as generally this technique is used for fish lying deep. If you aren’t getting the depth you want, than try adding more weight, a larger fly, or switching lines. I try to avoid a sinking line, as I like the line to lie on the water, for ease of control, casting, and of course, setting that hook.

The Technique

The wet fly swing at its simplest is this. Find the water you want, and cast across stream, to slightly downstream. Mend your line immediately, usually upstream. This allows the fly to sink. Then follow your line with your rod tip downstream. Lowering your rod tip as the fly swings across the current, so the fly will not have any drag. Some anglers like to impart action on their presentation with their rod tip, but if fishing in current the action is often done all by itself.
When the fly has reached the end of its swing. Lift the line up, by doing a small roll cast, and then cast it out again. For deeper presentation, cast further upstream,. for shallower presentation cast more downstream. If floating lines are what you are used to, casting the sinking tip line or even a shooting head line can take a little practice. Slowing down the entire casting stroke will be required, and allow the back cast to fully extend. But with a little practice, distance can be greatly improved allowing the fly fisher to reach water, unreachable by using other fly fishing techniques.

The wet fly swing is great for extending the season of fly fishing. When most other techniques prove to be ineffective, due to high or cold water. One can still entice those hesitant fish using this time tested technique.

What does the following story have to do with successful entrepreneurship? Plenty.

Once upon a time, in an enchanted land of bucolic green mountails, there was a blended household consisting of three children and two parents. Two of the children belonged to the father and one belonged to the mother from previous marriages.

The three children were all close in age, all the same sex. Economically and educationally they were all similar. They were well-mannered, good, sweet, well-loved kids.

One day, the children rescued a baby mouse from the jaws of their pet cat. The mouse was in shock and the children decided to nurse it back to health. They put it in a large plastic container and fed it with an eyedropper. They gave it raisins and kernels of corn which the mouse ate. They spent hours watching the mouse for signs of improvement.

The parents warned the children that the mouse would probably die. Mice caught by domestic cats often don’t survive the trauma, and after all, the mouse was a wild animal not intended to live in a large plastic container. The children, undaunted, decided to care for the mouse as long as they could.

On the third day in captivity, the children discovered the mouse had died.

The two children that belonged to the father ranted and raved angrily. They blamed their father for the mouse’s death because he had put the mouse’s cage in the garage the night before (it was summer and not cold in the garage.) They noisily screamed and yelled at the father, claiming the mouse’s death was all his fault.

The child who belonged to the mother said, “It’s sad, but oh well, at least we gave the mouse a few good days at the end of its life, ” as she got on with her own daily routine.

Same situation, same household, similar children, different responses. Why? Learned beliefs.

Beliefs are learned ways of looking at the world. We teach our children a whole slew of beliefs before they can even speak. Luckily, these beliefs are not written in stone. We can choose to unlearn the beliefs that hurt us and replace them with healthy reframed thoughts.

As entrepreneurs, we are forced to face and debunk many old beliefs if we are to succeed.

Do any of these sound familiar?

• Such a high percentage of small businesses fail. I don’t want to be one of them.
• I’m terrible at numbers (insert your own small business phobia here).
• I’m not smart enough.
• I need an “expert” to give me permission.
• I’ll never be able to get a mortgage if I’m self employed.
• I’ll never be able to support a family on my self-employment income.
• I’ll never be able to retire or I’ll retire in poverty.
• I’m not assertive enough.
• I’ve failed before and almost lost everything, why should I try again?

Do you share any of these beliefs with me? By surrounding myself with successful people who have done what I’m seeking to do, I’ve begun to disassemble some of these beliefs…beliefs I’ve learned from my parents, stories I’ve made up about my own experiences, and frankly, lots of stuff I’ve discovered is baloney.

To disassemble tired old beliefs you must:

1. Resist the temptation to blame yourself and others. The next time you find yourself complaining about someone else, quietly observe your words and resist the urge to judge yourself or others. Where is your belief about blame coming from? Does it have a gem of knowledge inside it? Is it going to serve you as you move ahead? If not, why are you hanging on to it? What are you getting from it?
2. Surround yourself with people who support your dreams. Don’t surround yourself with flighty pollyannas who worship you and tell you that you can do anything you want. Surround yourself with people who respect and admire you and who give you honest feedback without yelling, swearing, degrading, or criticizing.
3. Surround yourself with people who challenge you to become a better person, people who have already done what you want to do. Avoid the naysayers, complainers, and blamers even if it means you must retreat from old relationships. There is never any good to be gained from this brand of negativity. This doesn’t mean you ignore problems and discomfort; it simply means you don’t wallow in them.
4. Recognize the power of language. Referring to yourself or others in demeaning or derogatory terms is a huge energy sucker. See if you can go through a whole day without complaining. What’s the impact on your energy when you say, “I got 4 hours of sleep last night” (fact) versus telling everyone how tired you are incessantly throughout the day (feeling). Which one is going to serve you better? How will your body behave based on the words you use?
5. Use affirmations. I used to think affirmations (the practice of repeating postive statements to yourself) were the realm of groovy hippies and people out of touch with reality. As a childbirth educator in the mid-90s, I learned and saw evidence every day that the power of women’s beliefs played a huge role in contributing to functional labor. I can support this with facts and figures. Nope, affirmations aren’t just fluffy sayings to make you feel good and protect you from reality. They work. Our words to ourselves are form the core of everything we do and are. Affirmations are not sugar coated half-truths; they are reframed beliefs, that if repeated faithfully become your reality, and eventually, the way others see you.

Beliefs are about more than positive thinking. Beliefs are about more than seeing the glass half full or half empty. It’s about reframing your words (i.e., finding new words to support what you want, rather than using your words to focus your thoughts on what you don’t want). It doesn’t happen overnight. You must practice daily.

What does this children and the mouse story have to do with entrepreneurial pursuits? Plenty. Just look at the beliefs of three similar children to recognize the power of how we observe our world and what we are taught as children.

The digital age is here to stay, and the marketplace is huge and still growing.
