Sources of Vitamins When D Is What the Doctor Ordered

Getting enough Vitamin D is much typically not a huge issue for most people today, but it was just a few years ago that a lack of this vitamin was a serious health issue. As recently as the early 1900s, many children suffered from rickets, a severe malformation of legs caused by a lack of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is vital to the formation of strong bones. When both children and adults don’t get enough Vitamin D, they may have a tendency toward skeletal problems, such as osteomalacia, rickets and weak bones. This is also one of the vitamins that can help regulate growth, making it very important for children in their formative years.

You may think that milk is a natural source of Vitamin D, but milk is actually fortified with several vitamins, including Vitamin D. The practice began in direct response to the high number of rickets cases that hit the United States in the early 1900s. While milk is a good source of Vitamin D because it’s fortified with this vitamin, it’s not a natural source.

Some fish are high in Vitamin D and make excellent sources of this vitamin during a typically daily intake. Two of the more common are tuna and salmon. That means that a tuna sandwich for lunch each day can provide a significant start on the amount of Vitamin D needed to maintain healthy bones. Mackerel, sardines and cod are also sources of Vitamin D – which means those doses of cod liver oil had some serious health benefits for the pioneers who had access to few real medicines.

Eggs are another natural source of Vitamin D. You can use eggs in many ways to increase the amount of Vitamin D in your daily diet. Egg salad sandwiches are a quick “on the go” option, but boiled eggs also make a good “fast food” for breakfast or as a mid-morning snack.

Many people don’t like liver, but beef liver is a good source of Vitamin D. There are other benefits of liver, including the fact that this is an excellent natural source of iron – important if you’re trying to boost your iron or battle anemia. Unfortunately, it takes quite a large serving of beef liver to significantly increase the amount of Vitamin D in your diet.

One thing to remember is that many dairy products are fortified with Vitamin D, but are not natural sources. That means that milk, cheese and other dairy products won’t help you get the Vitamin D you need unless those products have been fortified with this important vitamin. Be sure to check the label before you assume that you’re getting the Vitamin D you need from your daily dairy consumption.

What Does Creativity Bring to Your Life?

In my 2004 e-book, “The Creativity Interviews”, I asked 7 questions about the creative process to 19 creative artists from a variety of disciplines.

One of these questions was “what does creativity bring to your life?”

As I’m looking through the answers with new eyes, themes start to pop up in front of me. As you read through these broad themes, and the actual phrases spoken by the artists in the book, consider which ones you identify with most.

Creativity brings adventure, affects my whole life and what’s “out there”

Artist spoke of a sense of “exploration”, “spontaneity” and “adventure”, and that their creativity “brings life to whatever I’m doing”. They felt the effects of their creativity on other parts of their life, giving them “unique problem solving opportunities” and “energizing my relationships”.

Creativity brings opportunities for self-discovery of what’s “in here”

Artists appreciated the “heightened awareness” and increased ability to “understand myself”.

Creativity brings connections to people, both in and out of my “tribe”

“I feel I’m part of a tribe of free people” was how one artist expressed this sense of connection and of being understood when they’re around other artists. Another artist recognized their creativity as a “gift I can share with others” – fulfilling the desire for connection in a way that’s natural and enjoyable for the artist.

These are hopeful points, considering how isolated and misunderstood many artists feel.

Creativity brings a spiritual connection

Themes of spirituality such as “gratitude”, “purity” and “essence” could be heard in some of the answers from artists. One claimed creativity gives them “a glimpse of the spiritual realm”, and another described creativity as “a soulful experience”.

There was also the idea that creativity brings “a connection to something larger than myself”, and “the feeling that I’m ‘in the zone’, in the flow of life”. Many of us connect to our spirituality most easily through being in nature. One artist found that creativity brings a “freedom to recreate what I see in nature”.

I think one artist summed up the link between creativity and spirituality by answering with one word: “wonder”.

Creativity brings an awakening, a jarring, a sense of delicious discomfort

Though I only heard one answer that fit into this theme – one artist felt that creativity brought a “discontinuity” to their life – I included it because it really interested me.

What about those moments of torment – before the dissonant chord resolves itself, before the elements and colours of a painting “come together”, before the ideas for a story or article make any sense.

And what about the plain fact that there is ALWAYS something we won’t know how to do, always something more to learn, always a creative idea who’s execution is out of our reach because our skills haven’t caught up to it yet. Is that partly what keeps us going?

Creativity brings a return to home, a “normalcy”

“Creativity IS my life” and “creativity is unavoidable”. For one artist, creativity is “a reason to live”, and for another “it helps me live”. Creativity is what we know, and when we’re expressing it our TRUE selves are shining through. As one artist commented, it’s a “relief”.

Another artist noted that creativity often brings “more creativity”. Which make perfect sense when you apply the law of attraction – the principle that states that whatever you focus on is what you’ll attract into your life.

Creativity brings a sense of self-worth and identity

For the artists I spoke to, creativity brings a “reward”, “satisfaction”, “pride” and “accomplishment” It contributes to their “self-esteem” and “sense of self and identity”.

For artists, who often feel so misunderstood and different from other people, creativity provides “a way of explaining myself to the world”. Creativity celebrates the fact that we’re different, by showing us “a sense of purpose” and “a sense of my uniqueness”.

One artist said that creativity “puts me in touch with the core and essence of my being”.

Creativity heals me

As a music therapist, this theme was not surprising to me. Not only are the arts amazing therapeutic tools to use in treatment, creativity can be extremely therapeutic for the person expressing it.

Some of the therapeutic benefits of creativity that the artists shared with me were “relaxation”, “centeredness”, “possibility”, “hope” and “connection with self”. Creativity “lifts me from my sorrows” and is “a way to translate my hopes & feelings.”

Creativity brings happiness, energy and power

The “endorphin rush” that one artist described was echoed by many as “joy”, “energy, vitality – it’s a rush”, “pleasure”, “magic”, “fullness”, “happiness”, “passion” and “a high”. Creativity is “uplifting & motivating” and gives “the impetus to push further” and “a sense of power”.

What does creativity bring to YOUR life? What do you miss the most when you’re not actively expressing your creative ideas? What’s the first thing you notice that changes in your life when you’re in the “creative flow”?

Naming the gifts of your creativity can help to re-ignite your passion for your creative work and can excite you into courageous action. Thinking about these gifts can also put a mysterious smile on your face while you’re traveling through the other parts of your life.

Whatever you’re doing – whether it’s taking care of life’s little details and obligations or taking care of other people’s needs – you can remind yourself that you’re one of the lucky ones with access to creativity. You have this incredible source of adventure, self-discovery, connection, spirituality, awakening, normalcy, self-worth, identity, healing, happiness, energy and power.

Did you ever watch your grandma knitting?

Wasn’t it boring? Didn’t it seem to take forever?

So why bother learning to knit?

  • the garment you make yourself is special to you or whoever you make it for. Create your own unique ‘look’.

  • you will NEVER bump into someone wearing the exact same thing. Style and originality in one!

  • if you ever thought you didn’t have a creative bone in your body – think again. Creating something useful will give you the most wonderful sense of achievement, second only to giving birth!

Manage Life by Building Thankfulness

Living in a continual state of thankfulness allows us to manage life with ease. True thankfulness is holding a state of gratitude for life’s learning opportunities and for spirit being present to get them to sink in. How can we build gratitude into our spiritual skill set, in ways that help us navigate through daily complexity?

First, learn to affirm your innate ability to cope. For example:

I can do anything I set my mind to

I am strong enough to withstand any criticism that comes my way

I navigate through this course with ease

I have the ability to see this situation through because I believe in myself

I live through this day with effortlessness

I help people wherever I go by being an example of strength and wisdom

I feel on top of the world with spirit, who knows no boundary

I’m smart, competent, and wise

Then affirm that spirit is a part of each day and every circumstance, and invite it to become part of your skill set, in whatever manner that feels right to you:

I rely upon Mother/Father God to help mange this situation

I feel content knowing spirit helps to choose what is best for me

God can tackle this situation and work through me

I channel divine love to aid in this situation

With each breath I take, I am blessed and supported by a higher power

The Goddess gives me healing power for this situation

I am expressing the light of Christ consciousness with every word I speak

I am supported by the universe

The third and most certain way to manage complexity is to live in a state of deep appreciation for all you have. But how can we be thankful for traffic jams, lousy weather, lost dogs, and missing luggage? The answer is: widen your perspective. Being thankful extends beyond the thanking we do for material possessions, job security, or life accomplishments, which is easy. A thankful state of mind and heart pertains to the continual acknowledgment that, in each and every instance you experience something far less than ideal, the experience is for your greater good. In doing so, you are relying on your higher power, and strengthening your connection to the Divine. For example:

I am grateful for this opportunity to learn more about my capabilities

I thank the universe for showing me this situation so I can be more compassionate toward others

I appreciate all the beautiful parts of my body because I am a wondrous creation

I welcome this challenge in my life and am thankful I can inspire others

Because of the family I have chosen, I am thankful to be even stronger than yesterday

I receive all my good with a thankful heart and rejoice in my blessings

My difficulties today allow me to cultivate wisdom. I am a wise soul!

Adopting this type of thankfulness puts you in the Superbowl of big picture thinking. You are not thanking the universe for giving you a bad circumstance, which will only generate more bad happenings. Instead, you are flourishing in a state of complete appreciation for what life has to offer

Don’t you always feel more inclined to give more to someone when they are enthusiastic and appreciative? Consider the times you have helped someone and have been overwhelmed with thanks. Didn’t it make you want to give more? Like does attract like, unlike what you’ve been told in the past. Although at a sub-atomic level, positively and negatively charged particles are attracted to particles with the opposite sign, and repelled by particles with the same sign, it’s not a good model for our own behavior and attitudes. Our theory of the electromagnetic force does not account for the state of the heart. If you want to be a person that is appreciated then continue to give unselfishly, thanking others for all they do. The same is true with the universe. Life provides exactly what we continue to acknowledge. You’ve got to learn to love life, be in love with life, at an intimate level. Anytime we acknowledge life is good, we are entering a state of gratitude. Be thankful you have an opportunity to challenge yourself.

Practice! Write thanks to yourself, and to others, on a regular basis. Wherever you go, show up with a compliment. When you visit someone, bring something positive in the form of affection or caring. Tell your friends how much you appreciate their sense of humor or their graciousness and never assume they don’t need to be thanked. Write thank you notes for dinners, gifts, and prospects you receive from all people in your life – your family, your partner, your children, and your business colleagues. When people receive your thanks, especially in written form, they take a little bit of your spirit throughout the day. Quit procrastinating and learn to get the words out of yourself. Once you learn how to do that, you will be amazed how that energy comes back to you.

Living in a continual state of thanks for being alive and well, and having a chance to improve the lives of others through your words and actions, turns negative situations around very quickly. By allowing life to happen through you, you offer your own unique thumbprint of the Divine. That is called living with joy. Thankfulness of the present is an element of almost every affirmation. Live in a continual state of thankfulness, express it in your words and actions, and you will be among the most endeared people on this planet. Without a thankful mind set, we do not nearly have as great an opportunity to explore the limits of our patience and our capabilities as loving individuals.

Cisco Certification: Five Things To Do DURING Your CCNA Exam

There are plenty of articles out there about how to prepare for the CCNA exam. However, there are also things you can do to increase your chances of success on exam day during the most important part of the entire process — the time that you’re actually taking the test.

I’ve taken many a certification exam over the years, and helped many others prep for theirs. Here are the five things you must do on exam day to maximize your efforts.

1. Show up on time. Yeah, I know everyone says that. The testing center wants you there 30 minutes early. So why do so many candidates show up late, or in a rush? If you have a morning exam appointment, take the traffic into account. If it’s a part of town you don’t normally drive in during rush hour, you might be surprised at how much traffic you have to go through. Plan ahead.

2. Use paper, not the pad. Some testing centers have gotten into the habit of handing exam candidates a board that allegedly wipes clean, along with a marker that may or not be fine-pointed. You do NOT want to be writing out charts for binary math questions, or coming up with quick network diagrams, with a dull magic marker. It’s also my experience that these boards do not wipe clean well at all, but they smear quite badly.

Ask the testing center employee to give you paper and a pen instead. I haven’t had one refuse me yet. Remember, you’re the customer. It’s your $100 – $300, depending on the exam.

3. Use the headphones. Most candidates in the room with you understand that they should be quiet. Sadly, not all of them do. Smacking gum, mumbling to themselves (loud enough for you to hear, though), and other little noises can really get on your nerves in what is already a pressure situation. In one particular testing center I use, the door to the testing room has one setting: “Slam”.

Luckily, that center also has a headset hanging at every testing station. Call ahead to see if yours does. Some centers have them but don’t leave them at the testing stations. Wearing headphones during the exam is a great way to increase your powers of concentration. They allow you to block out all noise and annoyances, and do what you came to do — pass the exam.

4. Prepare for the “WHAT??” question. No matter how well-prepared you are, there’s going to be one question on any Cisco exam that just stuns you. It might be off-topic, in your opinion; it may be a question that would take 20 of your remaining 25 questions to answer; it might be a question that you don’t even know how to begin answering. I have talked with CCNA candidates who got to such a question and were obviously so thrown off that they didn’t do well on any of the remaining questions, either.

There is only one thing to do in this situation: shrug it off. Compare yourself to a major-league pitcher. If he gives up a home run, he can’t dwell on it; he’s got to face another batter. Cornerbacks in football face the same problem; if they give up a long TD pass, they can’t spend the next 20 minutes thinking about it. They have to shrug it off and be ready for the next play.

Don’t worry about getting a perfect score on the exam. Your concern is passing. If you get a question that seems ridiculous, unsolvable, or out of place, forget about it. It’s done. Move on to the next question and nail it.

5. Finish with a flourish. Ten questions from the end of your exam, take a 15-to-30 second break. You can’t walk around the testing room, but you can stand and stretch. By this point in the exam, candidates tend to be a little mentally tired. Maybe you’re still thinking about the “WHAT??” question. Don’t worry about the questions you’ve already answered — they’re done. Take a deep breath, remember why you’re there — to pass this exam — and sit back down and nail the last ten questions to the wall.

Before you know it, your passing score appears on the screen!

Accelerating Battle Situational Awareness Research

In the future of modern warfare battlespace situational awareness is the key. In fact as things speed up to light speed with new weaponry in the net-centric robotic wars of the future the team with the best and most accurate information stands a greater chance of survival. If you see your enemy before he sees you he is as good as dead, but if he sees you first, you could be a goner for certain.

This puts situational awareness above all. That is to say above fire-power, accuracy, training, systems, strategy and the latest technologically advanced equipment. As once you are dead it really does not matter what type of tank you are driving, how much it costs, who built it or how new the thing is you see? Since I find no one to argue this point with as it is merely stating the obvious, let me move to my next point and that is in the future fighting force both on our side and the copy cat equipment of our enemy we will have needs to detect that currently we do not have.

For instance if a tank, convoy or other piece of equipment gives off little or no heat due to excellent use of efficiency or use of another source of energy such as batteries, we will need to have sensors which can see the unseen, cloaked, invisible and ambient temperature equipment of the enemy. How can we do this?

Well we need to detect the convoys, tanks and equipment from its electromagnetic field and sense its batteries. That is technology we need right now and must put forth research dollars to making it possible to allow us to remain the leader in the net-centric battlespace situational awareness realm. Consider all this in 2006.

Doggie Diets – 4 Keys to Slimming Down From Tubby to Healthy

You’ve been told by your vet, and probably your friends that you dog needs to lose weight, and as your dog gets older with less activity they tend to gain even more weight. So, how can I get my companion pet to slim down? Here are the main reasons your pet may be overweight, and what to do about it!

1. How much food am I giving him?

Even if you’ve been feeding your dog an All Natural Dog Food, it may still be overweight. Overfeeding is perhaps the number one reason your companion pet is overweight! Most people overfeed their pets and give them too much food. First, you should measure and track how much food, and how often you are feeding your best friend. Be sure to count how many treats they are getting daily as well. Then read the suggested daily intake your dog should be getting based on its’ weight from the bag of dog food, it’s right there on the label. Now you have a starting point of how much they are eating and once you compare it to what they should be eating, perhaps all you have to do is just give them the correct amount of food.

2. What am I feeding my best friend?

This is the second most common problem causing obesity in dogs. Hopefully you are feeding “Tubby” an All Natural Dog Food, but somehow he manages to convince us to give him table scraps and lick the plates. Once he has trained you to do this, it will be hard to stop because he enjoys eating what you eat. He thinks the pack eats together and should eat the same food, at the same time. But most adult dogs should only eat two meals a day, not three meals like we do, so how much food is he eating again?

Table scraps do not provide a balanced diet for dogs, especially because our meals vary from day to day and from meal to meal. Also, their nutritional needs are different than ours. Dogs should be on a consistent diet because they only produce certain enzymes to digest what they normally eat. So when you introduce a new food to them, chances are that they may like it, but won’t get the full nutritional value of it anyway. All Natural Dog Food provides all the essential nutrients that dogs need.

3. What kind of dog food am I buying?

We know that table scraps are not well suited for dogs because meat should be the main ingredient in their diet. Now go check the ingredient label of the dog food your using and see if meat is the first ingredient. If the dog food you are using does not have meat as the first ingredient, then find one that has meat as the first ingredient. Stick to one of the top ten All Natural Dog Foods like Eagle Pack or something similar. Avoid those with by-products and alot of grains. Getting their protein from grains will also mean that they are getting added calories from the grains, and some grains are difficult to fully digest and get an adequate supply of the available protein. You may think you are saving a few dollars by feeding your dog supermarket food, but the super premium blends are better for your pet. The All Natural Dog Food is more bio-available to your pet, i.e. the nutrients actually get into their blood stream. The inexpensive store bought food is loaded with fillers, and causes the dog to eat more as well. All Natural Dog Foods also recommend a smaller portion size, and you really get what you pay for.

4. What else can I do?

So, now you have changed how much food they get, what they are eating, and feeding an All Natural Dog Food, what else can you do? Well, the first option is to limit their food intake alittle more. You could also switch to a lower calorie blend of dog food. Dogs don’t usually like low-cal foods, but they will eventually eat it and get used to it. In addition, you could insure that they only have 2 meals a day. Of course you can also limit the number of treats they get as well. The final step would be to insure your pet gets enough exercise. Walks are good for dogs and humans, so take him for a walk and increase the time or distance you go. Most dogs don’t get enough exercise, so spend alittle more time with the special pet and soon they will be fit, trim and healthier.

We’ve given you 4 key ways to slim your dog down, and hopefully you will consider All Natural Dog Food, the very best for your best friend.

Links to Success

Did you know that web linkage is responsible
for a significant amount of web traffic?

Search engines are still extremely important
but many of the most successful e-commerce sites
claim that linkage programs offer a tremendous
source of web traffic.

It makes sense. The nature of the World Wide
Web encourages serious web surfers to navigate
from site to site through the links to other
related sites and resources “found” on the sites
that are visited. People sometimes forget that
the name “web” itself is based on an extensive
interweaving of sites, similar to links in a
chain.

It’s important for any site owner to seek out
and invite related web sites to “exchange”
reciprocal links. The site being invited should
be interesting, provide good links and present
useful, relevant information that complements
what you are already presenting.

A web site with an extensive listing of quality
links offers several advantages. First, the
site is perceived as being a useful resource,
and justifies revisits. Second, it’s more
effective than just placing banner advertising
on other sites, since a reciprocal hyperlink is
considered to be more believable. Finally, it
helps your site’s ranking with search engines
that place some importance on link popularity.
This is especially important with Google.

Business-to-business web sites require extensive
research to seek out, invite and establish
appropriate reciprocal links with other sites.
For others, “non strategic,” or general links
to other sites can be established quickly by
checking out some of the reciprocal link exchange
services that exist for free on the Web.

A word of caution about reciprocal links. Be sure
your site includes navigation within the HTML code
to prevent your site visitor from leaving entirely.
A simple method to prevent this is to modify the
links so that a new browser window opens. This can
be done simply by adding a “target” attribute to
the links, and set it to the value “_blank”.
