From Design and Drafting: Your City Skyline

Look at any modern urban center and you will find a gang of cranes erecting skyscrapers, in amongst the tall buildings already built. The fundamental component in the development of such buildings is steel. Steel structures are the spine of each city.

Before a building can be constructed, the building has to be drafted. This is where steel structure detailing has its introduction. Structural detailing design is primary to the safety of everyone involved – those working on the building site, and those finally inhabiting the building. A great amount of designing is mandatory in order to gratify safety ordinances while matching all the specifications the client and architect have ordered.

A steel structure designer is required to know all about pressure and force – allowing the structure to yield to outside forces, and when to resist such forces, to maximise the unity of the structure. A structure must also withstand huge weights, and so this must also be taken into account. From the weight of snow to the speed of wind, a steel detailer must take into account all kinds of outside pressures.

These days, there’s a greater requirement for creative design, which means the detailer can often find himself working on challenging designs and seek to transform them into a safe working space for hundreds of people.

All The Same, it’s not all bad for the detailer – software like Tekla Steel, AutoCad and Asteel have helped accelerate the procedure of detailing and drafting large buildings.
