The Code for Sustainable Homes – the New Standard for Sustainable Design and Construction of Homes
The UK government has a target for all new homes to be zero carbon emitting from 2016 and with the aim of greener, more environmentally friendly homes in the future has introduced the Code for Sustainable Homes. The code is the national standard for the sustainable design and construction of new homes and aims to create homes that are more sustainable.
The code works by awarding new homes a star rating from 1 to 6, 1 being the lowest and 6 the highest, according to their performance against 9 different criteria which are combined to assess the overall impact on the environment. The criteria which homes are measured against are energy and CO2 emissions, Water Run Off, Materials, Waste, Pollution, Health and well being, property management and ecology. The code is voluntary for the private sector but compulsory for the public sector but it is always recommended to keep on top of current legislation to be sure that you are getting the correct advice for your home. These days there are many companies who will provide you with qualified assessors who will provide you with the correct information for your home.
